Yoga to Enhance Sensuality w/ Rachel Allyn

Sex and Sensuality - a Meditative Workshop for your Sensual Self.

Do you feel disconnected from your sensual self? Aspects of the modern world can prevent us from living as the vibrant sensate beings that we are. Come dive into your body’s sensual wisdom. Learn how to prevent yourself from getting stuck in your head and cut off from your primal right to pleasure. Deeply listen to your sensations to better connect to the world around you - whether it be food, art, nature or a more intimate experience with your beloved.

Class will begin with a discussion by Dr. Rachel Allyn on body-centered psychology and neuroscience connected to sensuality. She will follow this with a variety of body-based experiential exercises that delve into the senses one by one, to reawaken what's been dormant within you. Leave the class feeling more vibrant through breathing exercises, meditation, and a dynamic yoga sequence. -------
About rachel: bio & specialties

I have worked in the field of psychology for over 18 years, providing services to diverse clientele in a broad range of settings in the United States. Raised in Minnesota, I received an undergraduate degree from Williams College in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts. Then I promptly did what any plucky graduate of a liberal arts school would do: parlayed my political science degree into work as a reporter for a San Francisco television station. Somehow, logic aside, this led me to graduate school in clinical psychology.

After getting a PhD from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) in San Francisco, I continued training at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis and received my doctorate in 2005. I spent years in the rocky mountain West focusing on psychotherapy, diagnostic testing, teaching as a professor, and becoming certified as a yoga instructor at the 500-hour level. Like many people I was drawn to yoga as a way to stretch tight muscles but continued because of the serenity and introspection it provided.

I blend Western and Eastern philosophy and integrate the mind and body, tailored to your specific needs. My specialty areas include relationship & intimacy issues (including sex therapy), anxiety, depression, stress management, sleep difficulties, trauma & loss, and emotional eating/body image issues. I have created a unique style of psychotherapy called YogaPsych®. This is based on research that the body stores emotions and other experiences, which get stuck within us unless we have a safe way to discharge them from the body. I help facilitate connection and release of these stuck emotions and behavioral patterns through yoga, breathing, meditation and outdoor therapy.
My clients remark about how approachable they find me, and this leads to a relationship of trust and teamwork. My ultimate message is for you to find your own path and serenity in this often challenging world. When not spreading this message, I divide my time between the trails, travels and the yoga mat.

KAVA-
1. What is Kava?
Kava, also known as piper methysticum, kava kava, and ‘awa, is a small shrub native to the islands in the South Pacific. The root and stems are made into a non-alcoholic, psychoactive beverage that has been used socially and ceremonially for hundreds of years in Hawaii, Fiji, and Tonga.

Kava is traditionally prepared by placing ground root and stem into a porous sack, submerging in water, and squeezing the juice into a large, carved, wooden bowl. Coconut half-shell cups are dipped and filled — punch bowl style. After drinking a cup or two a feeling of heightened attention combined with relaxation begins to come on. Although it is soothing, it is unlike alcohol in that thoughts remain clear. The flavor is largely inoffensive, but some find that it takes getting used to; it really depends on your preference for earthy flavors.

2. Kava as a Therapy for Anxiety

Kava has been marketed since the early 90’s as an herbal remedy for stress, anxiety, and insomnia; its popularity has grown ever since. The excitement is justified, as the clinical evidence supporting its use is quite extensive. Kava contains compounds known as kavalactones, they’re responsible for its psychoactive qualities. In the brain, they operate on non-opiate pathways to offer a natural and non-narcotic action against anxiety. Some clinical research even suggests that they’re as good or even better than pharmaceutical drugs like benzodiazepines.

According to Duke University Medical Center, kava is beneficial for anxiety and doesn’t produce dependency or negatively affect heart rate, blood pressure, or sexual function. In a 75-participant, 6-week, double blind trial conducted by the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry, kava was found to reduce anxiety and, aside from a few reported instances of headache, was well tolerated. It’s even been described as a promising candidate for future research into improving attention disorders.
